Chieftan inducted Into POAC Hall of Fame

by Sue Blake

We have learned that our beloved pony, Lannan's Siri Superdot Chieftan (Chief), whom we lost in August, 2003, was inducted into the Pony of the Americas Club (POAC) Hall of Fame for 2003. He was truly a remarkable pony who excelled in many different careers of his life, including:

  • Highest selling yearling at the POA International Sale in 1969

Began career as a breeding stallion and halter champion,

  • In 1976, began show training. He received the following register of merit awards: POA Champion at Halter, ROM, ROM (T), POA-ROM Champion, and POA Supreme Champion (the highest achievement awarded a show pony).
  • In 1983 earned the Premier Sire title; the youngest to earn that title at the time.
  • Earned the Proven POAC Producer award; Chief had 80 progeny - 76 of which carried the Appaloosa coloring of the POA.

In 1986, with his show and breeding careers behind him, Chief was gelded and brought to the Kentucky Horse Park. He represented the POA breed in the Parade of Breeds.

In 1994, Chief was retired from the Parade of Breeds and was brought to CKRH to embark on yet another career. He proved to be an excellent therapeutic riding pony and such a valuable member of our special herd. With his calm, steadfast, gentle nature, he was accepting and willing to do anything asked of him. He helped hundreds of children over-come fears, gain confidence, and have an enjoyable experience while also benefiting from it physically. We were so fortunate to have such a special pony. He was loved by many and is missed greatly.

God bless you sweet Chief.
